The Blackett Building is a symbol of scientific innovation and educational excellence at Imperial College London. The building offers a selection of unique classrooms in a traditional 1960s style as well as housing three lecture theatres, with the largest seating up to 246 guests making it ideal for training style events, summer school, AGMs and conferences. Named in honour of the pioneering physicist Professor Patrick Blackett, the building also offers four open plan areas, making it the perfect setting for conference registration desks, catering stations, exhibitions, and breakout spaces. A short history of the Blackett Building

  • The construction of the Blackett building took place between 1957 and 1961, under the guidance of Professor Patrick Blackett, who was then Head of Department. In recognition of his contributions the building was later renamed in his honour.
  • The building’s significance goes beyond its physical structure. It houses the renowned Blackett Laboratory, an integral part of the Imperial College Faculty of Natural Sciences. Since its completion in 1961, this laboratory has been made the nucleus of groundbreaking research in the Department of Physics.
  • The Blackett Laboratory was designated an historic site by the European Physical Society (EPS), joining the National Physical Laboratory at Bushy Park as one of only two such recognised sites in the UK. It was selected by the EPS for its significant role as the home of pioneering advances in the field of both theoretical and experimental physics.
